My name is Maxine Keefe and I have been practicing Reiki since 2012. Since then I have treated people ranging from children to those in their nineties for a wide range of physical and emotional conditions ranging from stress, anxiety and sleep problems. I also treat dogs and horses with issues such as arthritis, separation anxiety and loading problems. Please read on to discover how Reiki can benefit you both.
Reiki is a gentle, yet effective complementary therapy that promotes deep relaxation and natural healing. It works by using energy to balance you on many levels – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. The energy is the same that is worked with in Acupuncture, Shiatsu, Tai Chi and Yoga. It is suitable for everyone as it works safely alongside conventional medicine.
Reiki is non invasive and uses no pressure or manipulation, all that is required is a gentle, physical contact to allow the energy to flow into the recipient. It is a holistic therapy treating the cause of the problem and not just the presenting condition. It can bring many benefits such as deep relaxation, reduced stress and anxiety, increased energy levels, feeling of inner calm and contentment and it speeds up the bodies own healing systems.
Treatments take place with you laying fully clothed on a couch in a warm, quiet room with gentle music playing. During the treatment I will work my way around your body with my hands either resting gently on you or hovering just above. Most people seem to experience deep relaxation whilst they are receiving Reiki. You may also feel heat, cold or tingling coming from my hands, see colours or feel like you are floating or sinking into the couch. Some people feel nothing at all and just go to sleep! It varies a great deal from one person to another, but no matter what you feel during your treatment Reiki is giving you what you need.
Treatment lengths start with taster sessions which includes a free consultation and last around 35 mins. There are also options of 40 minute or 1 hour appointments. Each session includes a chat before and after the treatment to discuss progress, experiences and to answer any questions.
Whilst a one-off treatment would be beneficial, to get the most from Reiki I would recommend a course of treatments. This would consist of 5 treatments, of either 40 minute or hourly length, at weekly or fortnightly intervals. However everyone is treated as an individual and sometimes fewer treatments are required. Following the initial course of treatments many clients have monthly sessions as they enjoy the peace, relaxation and healing that Reiki brings them.
Please read the following testimonial from one of my clients:
"Having not had Reiki for many years, I decided it was just what I needed to restore a bit of calm to my life, and to improve my energy levels. I can highly recommend Maxine, as she is a very sincere person, who has a calming influence on you from the moment you meet her. Her level of skill and knowledge is evident in her treatments, which are comfortable, professional and relaxing. All in all, it has been a very positive experience, which I know I have benefited from greatly." Shana Stanley

Reiki for horses and dogs
Most animals love Reiki! It can help them in many ways; by calming before competition or changing yards, to delving deep into physical or emotional problems, such as mistreatment or bad experiences, helping them to release and move on. The following list shows how Reiki can help with many conditions and issues:
Physical – such as tendon/ligament injuries, laminitis, sweet itch, stiffness, loss of appetite and post operative recovery
Emotional – pre show nerves, competition stress (horse and rider), moving yards and separation anxiety, bereavement and loss
Behavioural – stable vices, spooking, loading problems, mistreatment and bad experiences
Groundwork - performance issues
Owner / Horse relationship - develop a closer bond
To give Reiki to an animal is also a simple process. With dogs they will guide me as to whether they want to receive the healing sitting on my lap, laying next to me or moving freely around the room as they wish during the treatment. Then I will either lay my hands on the animals body or from a short distance away, depending on how they wish to receive the energy. For horses I will stand in the stable with the horse tied up or else loose so they are free to move around as they wish.
The great thing about using Reiki on animals is that you can “see” it working. Your pet will most likely relax and some will lie down and go into a deep sleep next to me. If they are having a release of some kind they maybe fidgety and unsettled for a while. They all react in different ways and some may not show any obvious signs of relaxation during their treatment. They will wait until they are alone and then go to sleep to enjoy the healing energies. No matter how your pet responds, Reiki is giving them what they need. Treatments lengths vary, with dogs some will only need a short session of healing energy while others enjoy longer treatments of around 40 minutes. Horse treatments usually last around 1 hour but some sessions have been known to be over 2 hours! Your dog or horse will decide how much they have and it what circumstances.
With both horses and dogs after a treatment it is best to leave them for a couple of hours to fully absorb the energies and allow the healing to continue. They may feel calm and relaxed or they could be energised, all animals will respond in the way that is right for them. They may drink more water than usual and pass more wind/faeces, this is normal as Reiki helps the body to re balance and release what is not needed.
Whilst a one off treatment would be beneficial, to get the most from Reiki a course of 4 – 6 treatments would be recommended. However, every animal is treated as an individual and sometimes fewer treatments are required.
Please read the following testimonials from previous clients:
"I first met Maxine when she gave Reiki to my late horse Sam and I was amazed the way the positive healing energy affected us both. I knew Toby was an ideal candidate for Reiki. Maxine gave 3 sessions to Toby who responded in ways that I cannot describe. After each session he became so much more confident and positive, especially with the farrier. Toby was in a complete state of relaxation when he had his feet trimmed perfectly after his last session of Reiki. The farrier couldn’t believe that it was the same pony!" E Chinnery,
